Aim:

To create a multi-level building using Autodesk Revit by following NBC norms.

Introduction:

Autodesk Revit is a building information modelling software tool for architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers, designers and contractors.

The National Building Code of India (NBC) is a comprehensive building code, providing guidelines for regulating building construction activities across the country. It serves as a Model Code for adoption by all agencies involved in building construction works.

Procedure:

  1. Select the type of structure you want to build from one of the three below:
          a. Multi-Unit Residential Apartment
            b. Office Buildings
            c. School

I have chosen the Residential building for this Revit project.

2) Assume reasonable assumptions for geographic and location details for your project modeling. Based on assumptions and type of structure selected identify the modeling requirements from NBC

  • The location of my building is in Chennai.
  • Add the project information in manage tab
  • Modelling requirement as per NBC,
  • Total plot size is 50’x70’ and it’s a 6 units residential apartment of 2 floors with a total built-up area of 7200 square feet. Hence FAR value of the building is 2.05 which satisfied by the NBC.

3.Using structural model create footing, column, beam, floors.

  • Open the new Structural file and save it as follow
  • Go to collaborate tab and collaborate in to central model
  • Go to structure tab and create levels and grids
  • In elevation view create levels
  • In ground level create a vertical and horizontal grids
  • Specify coordination at a point in manage tab
  • Enter VG and enable project base point
  • Create the other grids as per the column-to-column dimension
  • Create new file for architecture
  • Create a vertical and horizontal grid and specify coordination point.
  • Collaborate the model using collaborate tab
  • Enter VG and enable project base point
  • Using Insert tab, link the structural file in to the architecture
  • Go to collaborate and copy/monitor and copy the file

  • Create column on intersection of grids. Go to edit type and create 9” x9” and 9”x 12” column and place it as per the plan by giving the below setting.
  • Create footing by selecting isolated footing at the column

  • Create beam on ground level connecting columns with the size 9” x 12” and 12”x 12” respectively.
  • And copy paste it to the other levels
  • Create floor slab from structure floor slab on ground floor level
  • Follow the above steps for other levels

  1. Creating architectural components:
  • Open architecture file and create a floor plan for 2-unit houses for ground floor.
  • Create architectural components from architecture tab and select the place a component
  • Add the components like windows, furniture, water closet and lighting fixture as needed from load family
  • Copy the floor plan and components of ground floor to the other levels except the lawn and trees
  • Give railing and as parapet wall
  • Create stairs from architecture tab by clicking stairs and giving below properties and setting.
  • And copy the stairs to the other level.
  • Use shaft tool from architecture tab to create opening for stairs
  • Use exterior glass wall around the stair
  • Go to architecture tab and select room tag to give area to the room.
  •

  • Create Lawn outside the building using floor.
  • Create tree using massing and site tab and select the plants and trees as needed

5.Sheet templates:

For creating sheets go to view tab and select sheet and appropriate sheet size.

  • Fill the title block if any needed.
  • Click and drag the view from property browser and place it in the sheet
  • Sectional views:
  • The sectional views of the building and its sheet are followed below.
  •

Elevation view:

  • South elevation view

East elevation view:

  • Both views in a sheet.
  • Floor plan with annotation:
  • All the other floors have same plan.
  • Floor plan with annotation in a sheet.
  • Structural framing:
  • Open structural file.
  • create the 3D view of structural elements and create sheet.

6.Render images of the 3D views:

  • Select camera view from 3D view drop down.
  • Place the camera at a spot and point out the location to be view which will display a 3D view of interior and exterior views of the building.
  • Then Click render in view tab an give the appropriate settings to get rendering image.
  • Sample camera placement view and its Property settings:
  • Then name the view and enter rr to create render dialog box
  • Then create the sheet for it.
  • Rendered image of the 3D views:
  • Sheets with Interior views:
  • Sheet with structural elements:
  • Sheet with exterior rendering:
  1. Print in Pdf:
  • Open architectural file
  • Double click the 3D view which needs to be set for print or pdf.
  • Press control+ P which opens the print dialog box
  • Select the folder to save
  • Click save.
  • Go to saved folder to open the PDF.
  • With the same procedure create the pdf for other views.
  • Result:
  • By following the above steps, a residential apartment is created in Revit software by following the NBC norms.
