    Design a simple double cleat angle shear connection to connect (ISMB 500) secondary beam with a primary beam (ISMB 600)  in a mezzanine deck of a building to transfer factored shear force of 200 kN. Consider bolt to connect angle cleat with primary as well as secondary beam. 

    Do manual design and also prepare a spread sheet to design this shear beam-beam connection

    The yield strength of the member (fy )= 250 MPa and ultimate strength of plate (fu) = 410 MPa.

    1. Consider 4.6 grade ordinary grade bolt. 
    2. Also design by considering 8.8 grade HSFG bolts.

    STEPS :

    • Assume diameter of bolt (16 or 20 or 24 mm)
    • Assume the cleat angle to connect and accommodate the bolt assumed comfortably with proper end and edge distance.
    • Calculate shear strength of bolt –double shear case (for bolts in secondary beam)
    • Calculate bearing strength of bolt
    • Estimate strength of bolt (minimum of shear and bearing strength)
    • Calculate total number of bolts required by dividing total load by strength
    • Like above calculate number of bolts for primary beam – Single shear
    • Now for HSFG bolt, calculate slip resistance of HSFG bolt and estimate the strength of bolt
    • PREPARE SPREADSHEET to validate the manual design.
