Exploring Simulink Basics in Simscape

logo

Skill-Lync

Welcome to the Physical Modeling in Simscape with Simulink & MATLAB blog series! In this first part, we’ll dive into Simulink, a cornerstone of MATLAB that enables engineers to create, simulate, and analyze models of dynamic systems. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced engineer, understanding Simulink’s environment is essential for designing and testing real-world systems.

Simulink’s graphical interface simplifies the process of building models, providing ready-to-use templates, block libraries, and simulation tools. In this blog, we’ll explore the basic steps to get started with Simulink, including navigating the interface, creating a simple model, and leveraging the library browser for system components. Let’s jump in and explore the potential of Skill-Lync Simscape Training in helping you master these tools!

Getting Started with Simulink

After installing MATLAB, launch it through the desktop shortcut or the command window. The default view consists of:

  • Command Window (center): Where you interact with MATLAB commands.
  • Current Folder (left): Displays project files.
  • Workspace (bottom left): Stores variables and data.

At the top, you’ll find options to create new files, open saved projects, and configure your environment. Among these, the Simulink button is your gateway to creating and managing models.

Exploring the Simulink Interface

Clicking the Simulink button brings up the Simulink Start Page, where you can:

  • Open pre-built models.
  • Start new projects.
  • Access templates for specific applications like hydraulic or electrical systems.

To create a new model:

  1. Click "New Model" to open a blank workspace.
  2. Save the model with a file name (e.g., first_model.slx).
  3. Use the Simulink Library Browser to explore available blocks.

The Library Browser is an essential tool, housing blocks and templates for modeling various systems. Categories include:

  • Commonly Used Blocks: Basic components like constants, sums, and scopes.
  • Simscape Libraries: Pre-built models for physical systems such as motors, springs, and resistors.

Building a Basic Model

Let’s create a simple model to multiply two constants:

  • Drag a Product Block from the "Commonly Used Blocks" library into your workspace.
  • Add two Constant Blocks and set their values (e.g., 12.3 and 3).
  • Connect the blocks using lines to form a complete model.
  • Add a Display Block to visualize the output.

This process demonstrates how Simulink converts mathematical equations into graphical models. In this case, the model represents the equation:

Output=12.3×3\text{Output} = 12.3 \times 3Output=12.3×3

Simulating the Model

Run the simulation by clicking the Run button in the toolbar. The results are displayed in real-time on the connected Display Block. If you wish to visualize the output over time, replace the Display Block with a Scope Block. This block plots signals dynamically, providing deeper insights into system behavior.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You’ve built and simulated your first model in Simulink. From understanding the interface to creating a basic system, this blog covered the foundational steps needed to begin your journey in physical modeling using MATLAB Simscape.

Stay tuned for the next installment, where we’ll explore advanced features like configurable templates, complex system components, and dynamic simulations. Ready to take your skills further?
