Exploring Simulink and Library Browser in Simscape

Welcome to the Physical Modeling in Simscape with Simulink & MATLAB blog series! Simulink, a part of MATLAB, is a powerful tool for modeling, simulating, and analyzing dynamic systems across various domains such as electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic engineering. Whether you're just getting started or enhancing your skills, this guide will walk you through the basics of setting up and exploring Simulink. 

Simulink’s features, including its Library Browser, pre-built templates, and integration with Simscape, make it a favorite for engineers worldwide. With tools like Skill-Lync’s Simscape Course Online, you can unlock its full potential and begin your journey in physical modeling using MATLAB Simscape. 


Starting a Simulink Session 

To begin, launch MATLAB and navigate to the Simulink button on the toolbar. Alternatively, you can type simulink into the Command Window to start the program. The Simulink interface provides easy access to previously saved models, including files like first.slx stored in the Current Folder. Always check the directory path to ensure seamless access to your saved projects. 

The Help menu is an invaluable resource, offering documentation for all installed toolboxes. For beginners, this is the starting point to understand core functionalities and access step-by-step Simscape tutorials. 


Exploring the Simulink Library Browser 

The Simulink Library Browser is the heart of the tool, housing all blocks and templates for creating complex models. To access it, click the library icon in the toolbar. The library categorizes blocks into: 

  • Continuous Systems: Includes integrators, transfer functions, and derivative blocks. 
  • Powertrain Systems: Features blocks for automotive applications like planetary gears and disc clutches. 
  • Simscape Blocks: A treasure trove for physical modeling, with blocks for electrical systems, mechanical systems, and more. 

The Simscape component library is especially useful for modeling real-world systems. For instance, within the Mechanical Systems section, you’ll find elements like rotational motion sensors and torque generators. Similarly, in the Electrical Systems library, blue-colored blocks represent electrical elements, while green blocks represent mechanical components. 


Using Pre-Built Templates 

Simscape offers pre-configured templates to jumpstart your modeling projects. For example, the Simscape Mechanical Library includes ready-made blocks for rotational and translational motion. These blocks allow users to simulate elements like: 

  • Angular Velocity Sources: Simulate rotational motion in mechanical systems. 
  • Dampers and Springs: Model suspension or vibration systems. 

Each block comes with detailed documentation that explains its parameters, governing equations, and usage scenarios, ensuring users can integrate them effectively into their projects. 


Running Pre-Built Models 

Simulink also provides pre-built models for complex systems, accessible through the Help menu. For example, searching for "pump" in the Help toolbar reveals a jet pump model. This pre-built demo showcases the interaction between mechanical and hydraulic systems, such as: 

  • A velocity source driving a centrifugal pump. 
  • Configurable parameters for pipes, tanks, and valves. 
  • Visualized results in a scope showing flow rates (Q1, Q2, QT). 
  • Simply click Run to simulate these models and observe outputs, such as flow rates over time, plotted on a scope.
