Advanced Modeling and Result Visualization in Simscape

logo

Skill-Lync

Welcome back to the Physical Modeling in Simscape with Simulink & MATLAB blog series! In the previous post, we explored the basics of Simulink and its Library Browser. Now, let’s take a closer look at configuring blocks, running simulations, and analyzing results. We’ll also discuss advanced features like color-coded signals in Simscape and the Simscape Component Library.

By the end of this blog, you’ll have a clear understanding of how to create and interpret dynamic simulations, a key focus of Skill-Lync’s Simscape Course Online.

Understanding Color-Coded Signals in Simscape

Simscape uses a color-coded system to represent various physical domains:

  • Blue: Electrical components (e.g., resistors, inductors).
  • Green: Mechanical components (e.g., springs, dampers).
  • Red: Thermal elements (e.g., heat exchangers, thermal masses).

For example, in a solenoid model, blue signals represent electrical inputs, while green signals represent the mechanical output of the solenoid. This color-coding simplifies multi-domain modeling, making it easier to visualize complex systems.

Running and Analyzing Simulations

To better understand how Simulink handles simulations, let’s revisit the jet pump model:

  • Open the pre-built model from the Help menu.
  • Adjust input parameters, such as angular velocity or pump configuration.
  • Run the simulation using the Run button.

Results are displayed in a scope, plotting flow rates (Q1, Q2, QT) over time. For example, a pump operating at 1800 RPM might produce specific flow rates. Adjusting the RPM to 2000 or 2500 changes these values, demonstrating the system’s sensitivity to input parameters.

Visualization and Post-Processing

Simulink offers powerful tools for result visualization:

  • Zoom Options: Focus on specific time intervals to analyze detailed behavior.
  • Cursor Measurements: Highlight and compare data points to calculate changes in values or time intervals.
  • Configuration Properties: Customize plot layouts, axis scaling, and time spans for better readability.

For instance, zooming into a flow rate plot might reveal overlapping lines for Q2 and QT, indicating near-identical behavior. These insights are crucial for refining models and improving system performance.

Creating Custom Models

Let’s consider a custom example: multiplying a ramp input by a constant value. Follow these steps:

  • Add a Ramp Block to generate time-dependent values (e.g., y=1×ty = 1 \times ty=1×t).
  • Multiply the ramp by a Constant Block (e.g., 12.3).
  • Display the output using a Scope Block.
  • Run the simulation and observe the results. At t=10t = 10t=10 seconds, the output would be 12.3×10=12312.3 \times 10 = 12312.3×10=123, visualized as a continuous ramp in the scope.

Exploring Advanced Features

Simulink’s advanced libraries offer blocks for:

  • Hydraulic Systems: Simulate pumps, valves, and fluid dynamics.
  • Thermal Systems: Analyze heat transfer and thermal conduction.
  • Mechanical Systems: Model dampers, springs, and rotational motion.

For example, a rotational damper block can simulate friction in a mechanical system. Detailed documentation for each block explains the governing equations, input parameters, and real-world applications.

Conclusion

From running pre-built models to creating custom simulations, Simulink and Simscape provide endless possibilities for physical modeling and simulation. These tools empower engineers to design, test, and optimize systems efficiently.
