Mastering AutoLISP in AutoCAD: Functions, Arithmetic, and Practical Applications

  • Subtraction: (- 5 3) results in 2. 
  • Multiplication: (* 4 2) results in 8. 
  • Division: (/ 10 2) results in 5. 

These operations follow prefix notation, where the operator precedes the operands. For instance, ( + 1 2 ) adds 1 and 2. 


Working with Data Types 

  • Real Numbers: (2.5 3.1) 
  • Integers: 5, -10 
  • Mixed Calculations: When combining real numbers and integers, the result defaults to a real number. 


Strings and Variables in AutoLISP 

Strings 

Strings in AutoLISP are sequences of characters enclosed in double quotes. They’re not processed mathematically but are displayed as they are. For example: 

  • “Circle” is treated as a string. 
  • “5” is also treated as a string, not a number. 


Variables 

Variables in AutoLISP can be alphanumeric but must avoid spaces. For instance: 

  • X1 is valid. 
  • X 1 is invalid, as spaces separate it into distinct elements. 


AutoLISP Functions: Beyond Basics 

Functions in AutoLISP act as the workhorses, executing specific operations. Examples include: 

  • (setq X 5) assigns the value 5 to variable X. 
  • (sqrt 16) computes the square root of 16. 
  • (print “AutoCAD is amazing!”) displays the string on the screen. 

These functions enable efficient coding, making AutoLISP a go-to tool in CAD programs for engineering. 


Practical Applications in AutoCAD 

  • Custom Commands: Use AutoLISP to design commands tailored to your needs, such as plotting custom viewports or automating title block insertion. 
  • Automating Repetitive Tasks: Eliminate repetitive tasks like renaming files or adjusting layers in bulk.
