Draft in Mould -  In engineering draft is the amount of taper for the mould or cast part perpendicular to the parting line or say tooling axis, it can be measured in degree. By applying the appropriate draft angle, the mould or the part will be easier to remove. Application require a minimum ½  to 1 degree, however 3 degree is widely accepted as the norm.

        Draft Analysis in Catia

The Draft Analysis command enables you to detect if the part you drafted will be easily removed. This type of analysis is performed based on color ranges identifying zones on the analyzed element where the deviation from the draft direction at any point, corresponds to specified values.

Creating a tooling axis with bisecting method

    • Analise the surface so we can find the direction for the tooling axis so in this case it is Z.
    • To create a tooling axis with bisecting method firstly create intersection line in X and Y direction.
    • Now search for the which we going to draft or seem it going to create problem while tooling.  Create line along those faces and using line command select bisect option type and select both line and select the point create line between them and say it as tooling clearing X direction, same for the Y direction also.

           Tooling Clearing X Direction

    •

            Tooling Clearing Y Direction

    •    Now create tooling axis these two lines X and Y using bisecting line.

select both the line and select the center point and create line on Z direction and name it as Tooling Axis.

    • Now Draft analysis
    • For draft analysis we have to change the view parameters in the material mode.
    • Align the compass to the tooling axis and lock the position.
    • Then click anywhere on the part to perform the draft analysis.
    • Now there will be showing green, red and blue colour. Those colour indicates the values of the drafts currently present in the part or surface.

If it is green the part is toolable or ready for the tooling or manufacturing.

If the part is in red the draft angle has to be change or not suitable for tooling.

If it is in blue the draft angle is in negative or less than 0 degree.
