      updated on 10 Nov 2022

    Aim:

    • Perforform Topo cleanup and delete unwanted surfaces for Surface wrap.
    • After Topo cleanup, Merge all 3 models and perform surface wrap.
    • Target length for Wrap = 3 mm

    1. Engine:

    2. Gear box:

    3. Transmission:

    Procedure:

    1. Topo Cleanup : (Engine, Transmission & Gear Box) - Topo mode

    Open Engine model

Using NOT operation in PID mode, deselect all the necessary components to identify the closed volumes and unnecessary surfaces

Using the delete option, select the unnecessary surfaces and unchecked entities.

Surface gleechings, triple cons, and single cons within the inside regions are not viewed much important as we are going to perform surface wrap.

Topo clean-up is highly concerned with the surface region as our major area of interest is surface wrap of this automotive assembly.

    Open the transmission model

Repeat same process Not > PID >

Delete the unchecked and unwanted surfaces & volumes

    Open the Gearbox model

    Again Not > PID

Delete the unchecked surfaces & unnecessary volumes using delete option.

    2. Merging of Automotive Assembly - Topo mode

Under file > Merge> Select the components (Gearbox, Engine, Transmission)

    3. Surface Wrap of Automotive Assembly - Mesh Mode

Next follows the surface wrap operations ensuring there is no open volumes or unnecessary surface entities.

The open surfaces are closed using creation of New surfaces (coons / fill hole).

Next is Wrap using Constant Length ( Elements > Wrap > Constant Length)

The Whole assembly is selected and the target length =3mm  are assigned.

PIDs are to be assigned in the octree for the surface wrap

The insignificant PIDs which are of no use are deleated executing COMPRESS tool.

the PIDs which has only significance are added into the OCTREE for suface wrap with naming it as FULL_WRAP.

Once the PIDs are incorporated, next is RUN.

    Result :

Thus the surface wrap for the automotive assembly has been performed assigning the target length as 3 mm

    Geometry:

    Wrapped mesh:

    Wrapping around some complex geometry

Mesh length of 3mm having tria mesh type

    Conclusions:

    • Surface wrap is achieved on the given components.
    • Surface wrap is effective for outside flow simulations where the volume between the body and wind tunnel is required for flow over the body simulations.
    • Surface is easier to perform since it does not depend on the quality of the wrap on each material as we are not interested in physics in the body.
    • Effective surfce wrap is achieved on the given body for a given mesh length of 3mm.
